Days 50-53: From Boot Loss to the 90s

Thursday:
Kalie and Cody in front of the London Eye
I started the weekend out with an absolutely awesome ride through Hyde park. Once again, Carrie and I were allowed to take "our" horses on the trail away from the group. It's kind of nice knowing that the trainer is trusting and respecting us more as riders. So, with me on Clifton and Carrie on Figaro, we were able to walk, trot, and canter the Serpentine trail and meet up with the group halfway around on the wider stretch. The instructor seemed pleased that we didn't get lost or fall off (her words), and so told us to go ahead and finish the wide stretch and meet up with the group at the arena so we could all walk back to the barn together. So Carrie and I took off, letting the horses get in a nice little canter. Now, it might have been the chilly weather, or maybe just our own excitement, but the horses began racing just a bit, so we figured- why not? - and let them go. Oh my goodness. What an exhilarating ride! There is something absolutely fantastic about galloping a horse down a nice wide trail, wind pushing so hard against your face that it almost stings, the only sound being the horses hooves over the dirt and our own laughter. What can I say? It was an adrenaline rush, and one that I've been missing for a couple years now. We made it back to the group without problem, walked back to the stable, and then back to our house. I spent the rest of the afternoon getting a little homework done, going to the gym, before we all went out to a wine bar that evening, where I somehow lost a boot. Honestly, the boot should be in my room... but it isn't. Confusing matter. I'd really like to figure this mystery out. I mean, we have phantom handprints appearing on the mirror in one of the other rooms, my single boot goes MIA. Does the London house have a ghostie? Well, it is fitting for Halloween. But really... I'd kind of like to find my boot...

Friday:
Friday was my lazy day. I got to sleep in, and then decided that I really could care less about being productive, and so I consumed an entire bag of goldfish while catching up on a few shows and then watching a movie. I did contemplate the gym at one point, but a romantic comedy just seemed far more enjoyable. So, I pushed some pillows together and watched my movie. This was followed by a quick dinner and then - wait for it- some more laziness in the form of watching Breaking Bad with some of the girls and guys in the house. Seriously, that show is addictive. Go watch it. Now. Regardless of my disgusting amount of laziness this day, I did actually manage to crank out the entirety of my history paper, which was a huge weight off my shoulders. So, a little productivity! And then a good night's sleep. Lovely.

Saturday:
Saturday I decided that I really needed to actually do something with my life, so after making myself a quick lunch (yes, I did sleep in again... gotta love it), I found Kelsey and we made a quick excursion to Portobello Road, where I bought some new boots to replace my old ones. I seriously have the worst luck here. One pair of boots just broke down, the other lost its mate, and my converse have holes in the bottom. Shoe fail? I think so. Anyhow, I bought some new ones, because running around in massive rainboots everyday isn't really acceptable, and then we headed back to the house when it began raining. I decided to hit up the gym to make up for my laziness of the day before, and it honestly did feel lovely. I think I have a strange obsession with the gym... but I guess that isn't exactly a bad thing.

So, after I returned from the gym I got ready to go out later, ran downstairs and made myself another healthy quesadilla dinner. Good thing I'm really lacking in food products here. Oh well, I'm going to Barcelona soon, so I don't really need to have a plethora of groceries that would go bad during my absence anyhow. Dinner was followed by some more Breaking Bad (again... I'm clearly obsessed with this show, and for good reason). After such, I was given an invitation to join Kelsey and Sinjin at a rugby party. Apparently they have their own bar, and this night was "Hammerween." Yeah, that bodes well doesn't it? With the theme of 90s party, Kelsey and I were really hoping that it was the same 90s that we went through, and proceeded to rock some shorts over tights, converse, tank tops and band T's, and flannels, with heavy makeup and red lips. It was actually kind of fun, and most certainly funny. We hopped on the tube, made our way to the bar, and were met by-

Yeah, definitely not 90s theme.

So, somewhere the theme got lost in translation, or maybe we were just ignorant to the fact that nobody really dresses up according to the theme, because it was just a huge eclectic group of costumes. Of course, that didn't really bother us, so we got our drinks and began dancing to the live band that was playing some older classic rock, inclusive of I Shot the Sheriff and Sweet Home Alabama. Really, really random music. Kelsey and I managed to befriend some rugby guys, danced around with them, got some pictures with some of the more awesomely-dressed people, and then one of the guys (Jeff) proceeded to drag us around the bar and introduce us to a ton more of the guys. I have never been in such a testosterone-filled room. Seriously, it was like... man-land. And I felt very small in their presence. But we both met a ton of nice people, many from Australia and South Africa, and then of course England. The night proceeded with more dancing and silliness, Kelsey and me trying to avoid a male-nurse-costumed guy who wanted to kiss both of us, and then our attempts at catching the attention of a trio of guys (Hulk, Skeleton-man, and Ghostbusters Dough Boy). Seriously- English guys are so reserved. So after they kept looking over at us all night, we leaned against the bar right next to them and they still failed. So, what did I do? At Kelsey's dare, I walked straight up to them and made friends.

We spent the rest of the night chatting with the trio- I hit it off with Hulk aka Dan, who was actually a tall soccer player that looked like a California surfer guy (love it!). Dough Boy had just a bit too much and wandered off at one point, and Skeleton professed to me that I was his second favorite person at the party. First place went to some random dude that walked by and looked very confused. I ended up chatting with Dan and sometimes Skeleton for good part of an hour and a half before we decided to head back to the house. While waiting for the bus, who did we meet? Jeff! He returned and began teaching Kelsey and me a South African dance while we waited for the bus. Gotta love it. Seriously, we met some pretty nice people that night. I can't complain. Of course, the fun wasn't over quite yet....

On our way back from getting off the bus and going home, we randomly met some Imperial students running down the road. So, naturally, Kelsey gives one a piggy-back ride and we all become 2-am best friends for the remainder of the walk. After professing our best-friendship upon parting, we made it back to our house, and into the kitchen, where some lovely snacks were pulled from the fridge. I finally bid my friends goodnight, chatted a bit with Kalie who had just gotten back from her outing that night, and crawled into my lovely, warm bed. Seriously... that thing is a beautiful creation.

Sunday:
With a time change, I actually woke up at 9:30 instead of 10:30 today... Fantastic. So, I got up, washed my face, walked back into the room, and decided that my bed was way too awesome to leave. So I hopped back in and slept til 11:30. I love weekends. After I finally pulled my lazy self out of bed, I edited my essay, put together my bibliography, and then ran downstairs for a late lunch. This was followed by a moment of self-hate at the gorging that had just gone on with really unhealthy food, and so I ran off and braved the cold outside and made friends with the gym again. I love that place far too much... but maybe it's a good obsession? Let's hope. After returning from the gym I had fantastic skype dates with my dad and Elise before showering and writing up this lovely thing before our house-prepared dinner and Halloween house party.... (time lapse here) So, the party was delicious. Yes, delicious. Chili and cornbread and sugar cookies, followed by none other than the final episode of Breaking Bad season 1 with Craig, Steve, and Ashley. A lovely, quiet evening in preparation for a 2-day week before Barcelona!

Monday/Tuesday:
Well, I can't say that there was anything too exciting on these days. Everyone was in a panic to finish essays, making me very thankful that I got mine done early. However, this also meant that the house was... dead. So I reacquainted myself with chick flicks and got in a couple of movies and shows and some laziness, matched, of course, by my gym visits. Oh, and then there was Breaking Bad. Season two has already started off with a bang. Love it. Tuesday night was finished off with some last minute laundry, packing, a little hanging out before crashing out early for our long weekend in Barcelona! Woohoo!

Days 40-49: Scotland is Freaking Cold

Monday-Wednesday:
So, finally got over the drama of the weekend. Well, not entirely, but I got over it enough when I realized what was done was, well, done. I couldn't do much to help it out and I just needed to go on and move forward past the nasty fact that some awful person took it upon themselves to steal my money. I got some of it back from a lovely Pepperdine scholarship, which was helpful, and I honestly realized how amazing my friends were through the whole process, which was worth far more than the scholarship. Monday was fantastic, as I got back into my classes and some sort of routine to keep my mind occupied. The week passed as normal, with classes up until Wednesday, where I did my equestrian earlier than normal due to my upcoming trip to Scotland! Woohoo! Riding was fun, as Carrie and I were able to go away from the group and do our own trail ride, which was so lovely and absolutely reminiscent of riding in the Back Bay years ago. Ah, it's time like that that make me want to go back and trail ride all through that area again. Oh well. Maybe this summer.... Anyhow, I finished Wednesday up with some Breaking Bad (and other ridiculously hilarious shenanigans) with Craig and finally passed out at some ungodly hour. But, a good beginning to the week, and it was only preceding an even better end of the week and weekend!

Thursday:
St. Andrew's golf course and bridge
Thursday began with the awesomeness of sleeping in just a bit and then finally receiving my package (which I had to pay an ugly amount of money for. Stupid British post) with my Ugg boots! Perfect timing! So, I made sure everything was packed up, grabbed a small snack, and began my journey to King's Cross Station (so Harry Potter- I love it). I made my train in time, grabbed a Cornish pastry for the 5 hour 40 minute ride, and rather enjoyed spending some time to myself. The scenery was beautiful and the train ride itself wasn't half bad. I finally made it to Leuchars station in Scotland without any problems, found my bus into St. Andrews station, and met my Emily! Ah, my first adventure on my own, completed without any problems. Honestly, it kind of made me feel proud of myself in such a success. So, Emily and I battled the cold air of Scotland, bought some take-away asian food and some Champagne and orange juice, and made it back to her dorm room for a fun night of reconnecting and girliness. Honestly... I couldn't have asked for anything else.

Friday:
playing in the ocean...
Friday began with an epic amount of sleeping in (after I spent the night slightly cold because Emily decided to steal the covers... but I still love her of course, haha). After such, we got dressed, meandered downstairs to share the most... interesting... lunch of some sort of sandwich in which the people just put a bunch of random stuff on the bread, and then began our explorations of St. Andrews. Emily acted as an amazing tour guide as we first found the golf course and looked at the St. Andrews bridge. Naturally, I had to get a picture on the golf course, and after that, we dashed across and towards the ocean/sea. I don't remember what it was.... Fail. Anyhow, the water. We ran along a kind of jetty, and then on the sand, and then I decided to touch the water. Yeah, the water wasn't too happy with that, and while I was trying to touch it a small wave took it upon itself to engulf my feet. So not cool, wave.

This was followed by a quick stop into one of the pubs for some delicious strawberry/lime cider (seriously- it was AMAZING), and the we continued our touring around the area. We checked out the castle, took some pictures, and then moved on to the cathedral. Apparently I have a relative buried there. I had no idea about that, but that's kind of cool. So, Emily, if you're reading this... go find a tombstone that as "McKie" on it. Just saying... You should take a picture. Anyhow, the rain picked up after this point, so the umbrellas came out and we began ducking into touristy shops and found some fun little items for ourselves and friends before we made it back to the room and ate leftover fried rice and played cards. We then packed a few things and met up with Kalie's friends downstairs in preparation for one of the girl's birthday celebrations. We grabbed dinner together before hitting up the bus and moving into Edinburgh! Had to go there, of course. I mean, I am a tourist.

The Green Bowl!
So, we played around at the girl's (Laura's) sister's flat, had a little bit of wine and snacks and some birthday cake before we decided to head out to the club Espionage, which turned out to have about 5 levels of awesomeness. We found a table on the lowest level after doing my first coat check (I felt so special... I don't know why...) and discovered this awesome style of drink called a "bowl." We got a "Green Bowl". I honestly couldn't describe what was in it, only that it was absolutely delicious and I wish i could reincarnate it. Seriously, though... It was delicious. Heaven in a fishbowl. So, we enjoyed a very social evening of chatting, pictures, dancing, and absolute birthday silliness, before we wandered around and finally got a taxi back to the flat. Regardless of the late (or early, I guess) hour, we chatted a bit more, tried to watch an episode of Fraiser, and finally crashed out. And, guess what? My blankets were stolen again. I totally am awesome at picking bed-buddies. Gotta love it.

Saturday:
Hippo at Edinburgh Castle
Once again, we slept in and enjoyed some amount of sleep. However, considering that we passed out around 4 am, it was more of a nap than anything. We got ready slowly, Laura's sister made us breakfast, and then half the group headed back to St. Andrews for school work. Laura, Emily, and I stayed in Edinburgh to do the tourist thing and wait for Emily's friend, Jo. So, we hopped on a bus and did a mini tour around the area, during which I reconnected with the boys from London (who were also in Edinburgh) and we planned a meeting at the castle since we were both conveniently in that area. Emily, Laura and I walked from a bus station through a bit of Edinburgh to get a taste of the city before moving the the Royal Mile road that lead up to the Edinburgh Castle.

The view from the castle... it was a gorgeous day!
We looked around the castle for a bit, which had an amazing view of the surrounding area, fooled around in the gift shop like the mature people that we are, and finally met up with the boys when they arrived. We walked the Royal Mile for a bit with them, ran into another group of Pepperdine London students, and then Laura, Emily, and I split from everyone to continue our own touring. It finally got to the point where we were all slightly hungry and it was way too cold to keep wandering around. Seriously, though... it was COLD. It this is any sort of preview to London winter... well... yeah. I don't even want to think about it. Ew. Gross. Way to cold, especially with the wind. Anyhow, after failing at finding a place to eat in the first 3 places we dropped in, we finally found a pub and got a very American snack of nachos and garlic bread with some Magners cider. Yum. It was quite delicious. After this, we decided to brave the cold again, found a bus, and met up with Jo, before returning to Laura's sister's flat to retrieve our stuff. Then we found another bus to St. Andrews, dealt with the 1.5 hour trip back, and basically froze as we ran to a food place in St. Andrews for dinner for our very starving selves.

Driving through Edinburgh
The food... delicious. Totally worth the wait. I got a gyro (very reminiscent of Greece) and some fries, because my eyes were way larger than my stomach, and then shivered my way back to Emily's room. And then? Well, then I proceeded to gorge myself on the food and then feel absolutely sick to my stomach from the massive food baby I created. Seriously... way too much delicious food... but... it was so delicious! Look at my trying to rationalize me gluttony even now. Wow. I don't know whether to be proud of disgusted with myself. Anyhow, my two new guys friends that Emily introduced me to (Andrew and Max) joined Jo, Emily, and me and we spent the night being silly and chatting and doing Andrews hair. Totally normal, I know. We crashed out at yet another ungodly hour and, once again, my covers were stolen. I can only laugh at this point.

Sunday:
My new friends :)
This day began as all of the others did- sleeping in just a bit since our sleeping hours were so absolutely warped. Then Jo, Emily and I moved downstairs once we were all ready and I was packed (amazingly, I was the first ready). We got another lunch, which wasn't half as strange as the one Emily and I shared on Friday, then walked back into the small (yet absolutely quaint and lovely) town of St. Andrews, figured out my bus schedule, bought some food for my trip, and then bought hair dye for the girls. I had to leave at this point, and so I hopped on my bus, made it to my train, and proceeded to read and listen to music for the 6 hour journey home. Again, it was quite nice having time to myself and watching the scenery and gorgeous sunset (it was seriously tropical), and yet I definitely got antsy towards the end. I was ecstatic to get back to King's Cross, buy another pastry (because I was starving yet again), and then walk back to my London home.

Honestly... I love my London home. It's brilliant.

Rainy St. Andrews
So, I made it home, safe and sound, unpacked, reacquainted myself with my room and bed, finally got in an absolutely beautiful shower, skyped my family, and then crawled into bed after finding out that my computer was no longer frozen. Honestly, it was a fantastic discovery. But seriously... it froze right before I left. Definitely not something I wanted to deal with that day. So, all in all? It was a fantastic trip. I couldn't have asked for anything more out of it. Seeing my friend, meeting new friend,s going to another country without having to stay in a nasty hostel.... it was an absolutely brilliant experience. I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders from all the drama of the past weekend, and that's all I could ask for.

Monday-Wednesday:
The week begins again! Therefore, I decided to include it in this post because not much happened at all. Classes resumed, I received actual work from my teachers, worked out my schedule for next semester, had very enlightening conversations, booked my trip to Switzerland, and finally went out again with my group on Wednesday night. How's that for efficiency? Time to plan Halloween weekend!

Days 33-39: Temples and Souvlaki and Islands, Oh My!

A little disclaimer... This will be an epically long post, considering it will consist of information and experiences gathered not only over the timespan of an entire week, but also conssiting of the Greece EFT. So, prepare yourself. That is all.

Monday: Athens
There's something very, very strange about waking up before the sun is even out, even in London where the sun is often nasty and hides behind the clouds. But seriously, 4 am in the morning? How heinous is that? Quite so. But, Kalie and I were up at this early, early hour, pre-packed and excited, and way too ready to head out on our first EFT- to Greece! So, after a strangely-timed breakfast and carrying of luggage to the bus, we were on our way with the rest of our London house to Heathrow Airport. Considering the early hour, we were met with little complications as we got more lame stamps in our Visas (seriously, what happened to the days of stamps with pictures? I don't want the date- I want a picture!) and then meandered around the airport because Pepperdine is, shall we say... overtly prompt. We had a good 2 and a half hours of wandering time. So, naturally, we decided on a second breakfast, because all of us were strangely hungry again. But I didn't really want breakfast so I got a BLT and potato wedges... Breakfast/lunch of champions right there. Whatever, Greece was a vacation, and we all know that we eat as much as humanly possible on vacation. My father's mentality right there- I totally approve.

So after being strangely twitchy on the plane, we landed in Greece, all out in the middle of nowhere-land in this strange little airport that had rather questionable security procedures. But that's just coming from someone who's been mad-dogged in Texas and LAX airports because the people who work there are ridiculously intense. It took about 45 minutes to get to our hotel, and our tour guide was awesome. I swear, it was like being in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, what with the way he told us how every word came from a Greek heritage. It was hilarious. We also got free hats- picture proof has been given. Yeah, definitely rocking the Aristotle Travel tourism cap. You all know you're jealous.

So we finally got to our hotel in Athens, which was nice enough. Very predictable two-bedroom rooms, a shower that had strange tendencies to flood our bathroom, and hard sheets. But heck- we were in Greece! So, while some people crashed out and napped, I decided to go on a mini tour in a small group to get a feel for our area of the city. It was a little more of a touristy spot, but we went into the Plaka, which is like the marketplace, where there are hundreds of small shops, many selling the same things. It was a crazy experience, what with all the people hawking their wares and basically jumping you to make you buy things. It was almost a little overwhelming- I mean, I loved the place, but there wasn't something that put me a little on guard and out of my comfort zone. However, with our group it wasn't like there were any issues, but it was interesting how I'm far more comfortable wandering around London than I was just walking through the Greek Plaka. Regardless, it was a very cool place and they had some awesome little  shops, a few of which I entered. I got a Greek shot glass to add to my collection, as well as some amazingly delicious baklava. Geez... that stuff is freaking delicious. We continued to check out the immediate area until dinner time, when we happily trudged back to the hotel and filled our plates with food. I got to sit through a slightly awkward conversation about my metabolism (not really sure how we got to that point... probably because I had so many potatoes on my plate and one of the girls wanted to know why I wasn't obese... awesome).

View from the roof of our hotel- yeah, it is the Parthenon
After dinner, I finally got to run upstairs and enjoy an amazingly warm shower and clean off all the nastiness of the plane flight. I can't explain how beautiful that shower felt. Yes, it felt beautiful. It was amazing, glorious, tres fantastique!  But seriously. Awesome shower. After this, some people wanted to go out, so I grudgingly agreed, regardless of my exhaustion, and after wandering around aimlessly and indecisively for a good amount of time (I'll admit, my patience was shot at this point), we realized that people normally have dinner around 9 in Greece and the nightlight doesn't start until way later. And it was a Monday night. Fail? Kind of. So we went to some "bar" of which was pretty much empty and sat and chatted for a bit while some people got a drink. Me? I tried not to lapse into a coma derived from an intense lack of sleep. Once everyone else started crashing out as we sat there, we decided to head back to the hotel around 11, and I made immediate friends with my bed. Sleep. Finally.

Tuesday: Athens
This was the day we got to sleep in the most- that is, we got to set our alarms for 7:30. Woohoo? Well, t certainly was better than 4 in the morning. So, with those happy thoughts in mind, Kalie and I made our way from our room to discover the glories of the hotel buffet breakfast. And, honestly, it wasn't half bad. Quite diverse. I was able to grab some ham and croissants and make mini sandwiches and there were these delicious things that reminded me of hush puppies. Totally healthy. And then toast, eggs, breads, cereals, fruit, among many other things. Go hotel- you pleasantly surprised me. After breakfast, we met our new tour guides and received these little headsets to pretty much yell to the whole of Athens that were were a massive tour group. Oh well, it allowed for the guides to speak to us as we walked, which was kind of cool. Other than the whole bit about the headsets being bright yellow boxes with bright blue headphones. With our group appropriately fitted with our tourism sets, we set out on our Athens city tour.

The entrance pillars
We began by walking up the marble pathway (marble everywhere- it made walking after rain a most interesting and slippery experience) to the Acropolis. I swear, it was fascinating! Being in a country with so much history and all these ancient monuments was mind-blowing, especially considering my love of Greek mythology. Just seeing these places, albeit in a tour group, was like stepping into a whole new world. The walk up the Acropolis was peppered with all these amazing spots to turn around and take in the view- and what a view it was that day! It wasn't exactly sunny, but still, as we got higher and higher up the Acropolis we were able to see the vast expanse of Athens.

The Parthenon
The tour continued upwards and we were met with the entrance pillars. Quite a bit was left over, but we could see all these places were fake bits were put in (the whiter stone) in order to help the "monuments" continue standing. Considering that the Parthenon has been destroyed multiple times, there was a large amount of different colored stone, but still seeing all these areas as they once were was quite awesome. So, after walking through the entrance pillars and getting our fair share of pictures, we walked forward and were finally met by the appearance of the Parthenon. It is an absolutely amazing site to see. Situated on the top of the Acropolis, it has this amazing backdrop of sky and the country. It was a completely picturesque scene, and personally, I liked the mildly stormy clouds behind it. It made the scene all the more epic for picture-taking.

The Erectheion
We wandered around the Parthenon for a bit, listening to the tour guide explain history and stories and myths behind it, along with how it was constructed and the reasoning behind pillars shape, size, etc. It was like behind back in Humanities 1 last semester, and yet it was cool being in the actual country and seeing the site, as opposed to just seeing a picture of it. And our tour guide had all these interesting facts and little jokes he's throw in, which made it a more amusing experience, as opposed to just another tour. To the side of the Parthenon was the Erectheion, which holds the Porch of Maidens and was situated right where the battle between Poseidon and Athena was supposed to have taken place. Although much smaller, it was no less impressive. We got to walk around this area for a bit, taking group pictures, talking with some women that were dressed in traditional Greek clothing, before we wandered down again and walked to Mars Hill, where the Apostle Paul delivered a sermon.

At this point it began raining a bit, but not hard enough that Kalie and I weren't able to get our picture with our international hippo cookie. Yeah, that thing is definitely at rock-status now. Oh well. It's touring the world. I'm thinking I should take all the pictures to Dad's donuts and see if I cant get free hippos for life, or something... Yes. This is a good idea. We hit up the Hard Rock Cafe for lunch after this (oh Pepperdine, feeding us American food) and then visited the Acropolis Museum after that. The museum had some more amazing artifacts and the tour guides gave us more information and stories. It was all quite interesting, although I think most of us were pretty dead on our feet at this point. We grabbed some coffee (meaning I just sat and chatted) after the tour, then headed back to the hotel, ran around the Plaka a bit and bought some more souvenirs, including sandals, before attending a lecture on Greek culture and politics by the same guide we had on the bus ride into Athens. I pretty much almost fell asleep because I was so exhausted at this point. I felt bad, because it was interesting information, but heck- we were running on minimum sleep.

Entrance to the museum
After this, we headed out for dinner, where our group once again had to fend off the crazy people that tried to make us go to their restaurant. It got to a point where we just bartered with one place, which ended up being the cheapest, and got 4 free liters of red wine with dinner. Win? I think so. I got my pita and souvlaki and I can't explain to you how delicious that food was- kind of salty, but nevertheless delightful in my belly. Mmm, Greek food. Again with the eating my way through a country problem... After dinner most of the group went out, but I decided on going back to the hotel, showering, and crashing out in preparation for an even earlier morning the following day.

Wednesday: Delphi, Ossios Loukas
Wednesday began with another early morning- 6:30 am, with the same well-spread breakfast, and then onto the bus. We drove through the plains of Boeotia, through towns of Thebes, and finally (after a VERY long bus ride) arrived at Delphi. Most people were pretty irate at this point, considering being squished in a bus for a good 4 hours (and the bus smelled awful after someone threw up...), but c'mon- we were at Delphi. Maybe it was just me, with my love for Greek myths, but the whole Oracle of Delphi in the temple of Apollo thing was kind of exciting. Call me a nerd. I accept it. So we arrived at Delphi, considered the center of the world by the Greeks, and began yet another long walk upward towards the Temple of Apollo. Yet another temple? I think not. Okay, so they all look kind of similar, but it's the history that makes it all the more amazing! The history and myths and legends. Did you know that one of the Oracles is known to have made a prophecy concerning the coming of Jesus? Kind of cool stuff right there.

So we walked upward and saw the remnants of the temple, where the Oracle used to stay and where the fumes rose from the earth (which she would breathe in and then the priests would explain her prophecies or answers to questions), were the sacrifices were slaughtered, a rock that Apollo supposedly threw at a serpent, ancient artifacts that were brought as tribute, Greek writing on large stones, a small "theater" area, among so many other things. After taking the appropriate amounts of pictures after listening to the tour guides through our epic headsets, we hit up the museum for Delphi. This was cool, but slightly redundant, considering the fact that we were running a bit behind schedule and all of us were basically starving. We finally to to lunch around 3, which was decent, but again, not very Greek. Oh well. The place had a beautiful view.

We hopped back into the bus following lunch and made our way to and old Byzantine-style Greek Orthodox monastery. We toured this for a short period of time, looking at the old artwork, learning some more about the history of the place, before we once again made friends with the bus and prepared ourselves for the long ride home. The drive home had some gorgeous scenery, but I was quite excited to reach the hotel. We had dinner on our own again that night, and once we went out the large group was again met with our trademark indecisiveness. So, unwilling to stand around while angry restaurant people kept badgering us with their menus, a few of us just separated from the group and hit up the same place as the night before and enjoyed yet another delicious and cheap dinner. No regrets there. That place was fantastic! After dinner we made our way back to the hotel, and I proceeded to fall into my pattern of showering and crashing out after an extremely long day.

Thursday: Aegina
Oh, early mornings! Once again, a 6:30 wake-up to prepare for the day most of us were looking forward to- the trip to the island of Aegina! We hopped onto our little boat that took us to the island, and after arriving and pretty much drooling over the beauty of the place, we walked from the dock to yet another... bus. Seriously? We were all too busy staring open-mouthed at the quaint little town by the water to really desire yet another bus ride. However, we hopped on and began a tour of the island that actually turned out to be fascinating- and we saw the diverse beauty of the place. We drove through the seaside town first, where the food and tourism places were pointed out, so we knew were to go once we returned and were given our 5 hours of free time to explore and relax and enjoy ourselves. After moving out of the seaside area, we moved upward and deeper into the island.

We stopped for a short period of time at a church. This place was absolutely beautiful, pretty much like most of the island. Aegina was definitely a site to behold. We wandered into the church and the tour guides once again educated us on a little of the history of the church and the religious aspects of the area after the idea of the gods and goddesses faded out. We walked into the church and got to look at more of the older artwork. After such, we were able to take some more pictures (definitely rocking the tourist badge left and right), before we headed back to the bus and continued our island tour.

We drove around the island until we finally reached another temple- the Temple of Athena Aphaia, or the unknown goddess. We walked up to the temple and were once again met with an absolutely gorgeous view of the surround area and the island. Honestly, this was what I expected Greece to look like- far less like the more industrialized Athens and more like this open, gorgeous area. And we were finally met with a beautiful day! We'd been having overcast, rainy days in Athens, so it was lovely enjoying the warm sun and the blue skies as we wandered around the ancient ruins of the temple. After the tour guides were through talking, they allowed us to take some more pictures before we all piled back into the bus and continued our tour around the rest of the island.

We finally landed back in the harbor area, after being pointed in the direction of the one beach we were able to swim at if we were brave enough to face to cold water. Then we were given the rest of the time on the island- a good 5 hours- to do whatever we pleased. So, first we found our food and then began checking out the main street before most of us ended up at the beach. It was so fun being able to chill in the sun after being in London (with its lack of Vitamin D). And honestly- the water really wasn't that cold at all, especially once you got used to it. A ton of us ended up going into the sea and hanging out there for a bit until the breeze picked up and some dark clouds began forming dangerously on the horizon. Well, at least we'd been able to enjoy the sun while we needed it. After leaving the water, we all began doing frantic towel changes as the clouds grew darker and darker. A huge storm broke out just as we were finishing and a few of us hid under the canopy of an old hut as hail and pounding rain began. It was crazy- it went from warm and sunny to pounding rain in all of about 10 minutes! We hid in our spot until the rain finally slowed, then hit a bar across the street and finally went on a mad search for hot chocolate for Kalie, during which the skies opened up again and began a second frantic downpour.

After finally finding a place to hang out in, the rain stopped and the sun decided to grace us with its presence yet again. Crazy weather! We hung out in a cafe for a bit, chatting and trying to avoid the nasty flies that were everywhere, before we tried some of the island's renowned pistachios and finally boarded the boat yet again! We traveled back to the port of Piraeus and drove to a nice seafood restaurant for dinner. We all felt severely underdressed for the place, but at least we all looked semi-awful. Now, to talk about the food- holy hell, this place was delicious, and we got SO much food. They began with a rice dish with mussels and tiny shrimp and a basket of bread. This was followed by salad, calamari, and grab, and then we got our main dishes of either chicken and vegetables or lobster. After that? Some chocolate pudding. I swear, I haven't eaten that much in a long, long time. I'm not a seafood person, but it was so good (except for the lobster... I heard it was a bit overcooked. Good thing I had the chicken). Dinner was followed by a trip back to the hotel where we packed up and then did a quick trip back into the Plaka for some last minute shopping in Athens before bed.

Friday: Corinth
Wow, my hands are actually getting tired from typing this thing out. Okay, ready for the home stretch? Let's go. I'll keep it brief. Hopefully. Friday was met with a trip to Corinth. We began at the Corinth Canal, where about half of our group decided to throw themselves off a bridge over the canal in an insane bungee jumping experience. Me? I decided to forgo this adventure due to my back, which was already angry enough from all the sitting and driving. No worries, though- it was a blast watching everyone else doing it and getting fantastic pictures of this insane daredevil event. We were at the canal for quite an amount of time, but finally finished up with the jump after once again falling behind schedule, and drove to lunch. And... wait for it- Greek food! Lots of it. Again. Gotta love it. We got some pita bread with a delicious salad and a huge plate of fries. After this, we were handed some rice and pork souvlaki and followed with tiny desserts. I swear. They want us to grow into large, round human beings. But it was so delicious, so I'm not really complaining.

After lunch we headed to some more ruins for another Temple to Apollo. It's crazy driving through these towns and seeing these massive pillars jutting out. It's like, "no big deal, we Greeks just have ancient temples in our backyards..." Yeah, The USA doesn't really have anything on them when it comes to such epic history. We wandered around the ruins with the tour guides and our headsets for a bit, saw a small museum, and then returned to the bus just as the sunny skies moved away and rain began falling. Perfect timing? I think so. After this we drove to the airport (look at how efficiently I'm typing this now!), had yet another strangely long flight in which I was twitchy and my media stuff didn't work, ate the plane food which wasn't too bad, landed, got our stuff, and then gasped in shock as we were met with the really cold London weather. What a change from Greece, although I won't miss the mosquitos and flies in Athens. Yuck. So, we drove home to our London house and finally got to relax and unpack.

Well, at least for a bit.

I got the lovely surprise of realizing that someone had decided to kindly invade my room and privacy while we were all gone and steal off of my cash. Excellent. That was exactly the kind of homecoming gift I wanted. So, after spending hours figuring stuff out, dealing with Bank of America, freaking out, and pretty much going from happy to be home to a very unhappy person, I was finally able to shower around 2 in the morning and go to bed. Ugh. What an awful end to such a great trip.

Saturday:
This day was a mix of both good and bad. I woke up and was hit again with the huge awfulness of realizing that I'd been stolen from. I decided that I needed to go to the gym to get this nonsense out of my head, and was informed once I reached the gym that I needed to renew my membership. Awesome. Cause I really wanted to spend the last of my cash on renewing that. So, trying not to break down in front of the lady, I renewed the membership and finally got my stress-reducing gym time in. When I got back to the house, I realized I still had to pay for a package that was being held by customs (awesome... needed that as well. Ugh). I finally got ready to go to Essex with Kalie and Sinjin for their tattoos. It was such a long tube ride, but nice listening to music and chatting with Kalie. We finally got to the parlor and met up with Sinjin. We hung out with him as the artist began working on him. Kalie's artist did hers in all of about 5 minutes about halfway through Sinjin's, so we continued to chat and hang out while his was finished up. This parlor was fantastic- awesome vibe, cool people who were interested in our form of study abroad and California, and such. It was a lovely distraction. We finally made our way home, dropped by the market for some quick 99 pence food, then made it home where we all relaxed. I uploaded my Greece photos finally, watched a few shows, and finally crashed out after having a much-needed conversation with my mom.

Sunday:
Probably the best day out of this weekend. I finally came to terms with my crappy situation, went to the gym for a lovely bout of exercise (I love being back at the gym and not gorging myself on Greek food), and then watched a couple shows and enjoyed a lazy afternoon. This was followed by working on this blog for far too long, a delicious carne asada dinner followed by scary movie night with our group. I'm kind of ready for Monday... I think I need a little scheduling and distractions right now, but hopefully I'll be getting my care packages within the next few days and hopefully I'll figure some sort of solution to this awful situation with the money. I get to talk to our director tomorrow, which will give me further peace of mind. Lovely. For now... sleep. I need it, considering I was woken up way too early this morning by the people next door screeching along to some God-awful song.

Days 30-32: Again, Lacking in Creativity

Friday:
So, I'm super glad that my internet decided to cut out just as I was finishing up this weekend's blog. What does that mean? Well, first I get to complain quite a bit, rant a little, vent some more. Okay, good, glad I got that out of my system. Now, I get to rewrite the whole dang thing. Seriously... kind of an obnoxious move, Internet. Ugh. So, Friday. Well, after waking up to the melodious cadence of a fire alarm far too early in the morning (and by melodious cadence I mean heinous screeching), the whole of the house stumbled downstairs, pajama-clad, to congregate outside the house in dazed, sleepy confusion. After standing there in somewhat of a half-conscious stupor, we were told that it was just a mistake and that we could all go right back in. Awesome. Just how I wanted to start my day... not. So I just went back to sleep instead, woke up at 1:30 like a true college kid, made some toast for myself and hit up the gym. Woohoo. Working out. Yeah... After the gym a few of us watched the first half of Across the Universe while dining on house-made Mexican food (gotta love how we're all obsessed with that), and then proceeded to go find this Alice in Wonderland-style bar. Scratch and Sniff wallpaper, flamingos on the ceiling, drinks out of jam jars- that kind of thing. It was somewhat of an epic journey, and yet... failed. Why? Because it was 21 and older. Awesome, glad we're back in the States for a night... After grabbing some food to sustain our munchiness, we met up with other members of the group at another bar, and then headed home after talking with some people from UNC. Gotta love how we always meet the Americans. It's like we have some creepy inward call that draws us to one another... Who knows? But what I do know is that it's time to meet for Brits!

Saturday:
Slept in once again, although not half as late. I started the day with a nice lunch out to my favorite asian food place, Oriental Canteen, then came back and made my train reservations to go to Scotland and see my beauteous friend, Emily! So excited about this. After such, I headed to the gym again (go me!), came back and finished Across the Universe with the group, then went out earlier than normal to our gay and lesbian-friendly pub, The Black Cap in Camdon Town. I love that place. After an absolutely delicious dinner of fish and chips while watching X-Factor on the pub television, we wandered around Camdon a bit before heading home and chilling in the park. It was a lovely evening on conversation and laziness, which is totally fine by me. I like a quiet night here and there.

Sunday:
Woke up at 9:45 and decided that such a decent hour really was quite indecent, so I went back to sleep until noon and was then told that a large group of us was hitting up Camdon Town again. Why not? It was an absolutely gorgeous day! Seriously, Malibu weather today, so why not take full advantage of it? We wandered around Camdon for a couple hours, checking out all the boutiques and shops and food places. Seriously, I could keep going back there again and again and never get bored, because there are so many places. It just winds around and around and you discover new shops each visit. And, the river was gorgeous today, especially as we walked over the bridge that overlooks the canals- it was such a fantastic little outing. On our way back, a few of us grabbed crepes (ever so healthy of us), then made it back to the house. I split from the group while they went to go watch Mad Men and made friends with the gym for a good 2 hours in preparation for no gym time for then ext 5 days. I'm kind of proud of myself. After the gym found my finishing off the rest of my food that won't stay nice while I'm gone in Greece, then packing for the trip and then off to sleep much earlier than normal. 4:15 wake-up call tomorrow. Ooh, that's going to be harsh...

Days 26-29: Study all Day, Party All Night... and Day.

Monday:
Ah, Monday morning- the start of another week, and this one contains midterms. Gross. Made it through History class without nodding off too many times. I think sleeping in super late all weekend helped me out a bit in the whole exhaustion department. Took advantage of the break between classes to hit the gym (definitely needed that after last night's gorging on Mexican food), got a little more studying done, and then moved to Fine Arts class. This was followed by a ridiculous adventure home in which the teacher didn't really give us directions and the Tube strikes were going on... Can I please explain how aggravating that is? We're left in some completely random place at some museum we've never gone to before, completely pressed for time after getting out of class late, and we can't take the Tube. End Rant. Kind of... So, after finding the appropriate bus and missing our free group dinner (huge bummer, because it was My Old Dutch again and they have bomb crepes), we dropped right off at South Kensington Station, grabbed some quick asian food, and met up with the rest of the group. After consuming food at a rapid-fire pace, (I'm pretty sure I've never eaten a jumbo spring roll and noodles that fast in my life) we danced off to Camdon Town for the Kook's concert! At least half of the house got tickets for this brilliant affair, so that was a blast. The venue was fantastic, and it turned out to be a show with about a dozen different British groups playing about 3 songs each, all to raise money for a charity and in memory of a guy who recently committed suicide. A much deeper affair than we expected, but it was really good and all of the bands were sending great messages and were so supportive. And the crowd was great too- altogether a really fun step into London music culture while supporting a great cause. It was a ton of fun, with pop, grunge, rock, alternative, techno, among many other genres, interspersed with awesome dance parties and hyperactive DJs, sparkling robots, and a fun, crazy crowd. After the concert, Craig, Sinjin, Kalie and I made our way to Pizza Hut (we were the only ones to stay for the duration of the concert- so glad we did), and then caught a Tube train, where we then had to find the correct bus (yet again), and finally managed to make our way home. Oh, and this was after realizing Craig had no money on his card so we had to play nicely with the Tube attendants to get him through for free (which worked, amazingly, especially considering we were there about 15 minutes til it closed). All in all? A really fun night out with friends. More studying tomorrow! Bleh.

Tuesday:
Okay, seriously, this sickness needs to bite the dust. Waking up with what feels like multiple rocks in my throat does not cut it. Yuck. At least I got to sleep in til 11:30 today. I swear, all I do is sleep. Not really, because I was out at an epic concert last night, which definitely does not constitute as being lazy and sleeping... but if I can sleep in, boy, do I sleep! We had Convo today, got to learn all about our upcoming trip to Greece (ye-AH!), then I headed downstairs to make a most excellent quesadilla with chicken, cheese, and black olives and grilled to perfection in the house's panini maker. After that? The ever-fun joy of studying and studying and studying some more, with a How I Met Your Mother episode thrown in to save my sanity. This was followed by another quesadilla for dinner because I really don't have anything else to make right now. And then? Well, we know the drill. More studying. Geez, if this isn't repetitive and mundane I don't know what is. I can't wait until 6pm tomorrow when all the midterms are done and all we have to do is have far too much fun until Greece... and then have more fun. Yeah, definitely like the sound of that. Bring on tomorrow night!

Wednesday:

So, for the sake of my studies, I actually got up at 7am today. Woah, huge deal right there. But seriously, 7 am no? Not really my thing. At least I got to wake up to the sound of rain and some horse clomping along the street somewhere nearby. Yes, the cadence of those two mingled together definitely helped me get over the fact that it was way too early to be a fully functioning human being. Anyhow, touched up a bit on my studying, slowly got ready and had a delightfully warm croissant for breakfast with some OJ (go AWAY sickness!), had a lovely conversation with a friend via Facebook in which I was again reminded of how pale I'm going to get over here, and then... History of the Modern Middle East! Cue dramatic music? Dun dun duhhhh. Brilliant. I should become a musician. Anyhow, ran off to that class and pretty much blew that essay out of the water. At least the the whole memorized pieces bit. But seriously, I know my Islamic Law (Shari'ah- sacred law, people!), and don't even get my started on the 5 Pillars of Faith! Wha-bam. Got that stuff down. Anyhow, ignoring my sudden fit of insanity as I type this, I kind of BS'd my conclusive evaluation, but the question itself was so general so hopefully my splendid writing skills (please, note the intentional use of immodesty for the sake of continuing my ridiculous tangent) did me justice. Next in line? Studying for Humanities and memorizing the crap out of the 100 Years War and Gothic Art. Good thing I have 6 hours until that midterm. Maybe I'll go to the gym? Maybe... Our hours are awful since we're not Imperial students, but I guess I could go at 2.... We'll see. For now, lotsa studying in my future. Bring it on.

Studied Humanities until my brain wanted to fall out of my ears. Even a lunch break couldn't keep me from running around my room like a maniac, because I returned to my room and studied for another half hour and then found myself wondering why our gym hours are so awful. Oh well, definitely made a visit to run off the craziness before the final. I swear, I hit a massive wall from this repetitive studying. I definitely wasn't used to such shenanigans. Honestly, school? Mehhh... Fun. Sleep. Food. I like those much better. Whatever. After the immense 6 hour break, my midterm finally reared its ugly head and I, well, I dominated it like the English dominated the Channel when fighting the French. Seriously, 100 Years War and Gothic Art? You are my... well, we all know what word goes there. We'll keep it G for all audiences, here. But seriously. I. Am. Done. Midterms: check. Da Mario's for dinner tonight (swordfish in pasta last time, delicious sauceless pizza tonight!), horses tomorrow morning (why the heck have I not received my package yet? I swear, the postal service ate it and I need my gloves cause my hands are getting torn up by the reins), and then the weekend begins its absolute fantasticalness. That's actually a word. No red squiggly line. Wow, this was possibly the most sporadic post I've made so far. Hiatus now. I'll finish once I get back from whatever I do tonight to sum up this very, very long day. But at least I've got a ton of energy from my gym workout and finishing those midterms. I haven't handwritten that much in a long time. Anyhow, 5 minute coma time before dinner. Yahoo!

Gotta love the bathroom posters
Mmmm dinner was delightful. Kalie and I watched Glee before we headed out with the gang to celebrate the conclusion of midterms (and basically the first academic thing I've really had to do here so far... I'm obviously missing something...).  Glee was super sad this evening so that was a nice start to the evening... but not really. Anyhow, past the emotional drama of the show, we hit up the park with the boys and ended up having a fun time as groups joined at the bar right across from our house. Literally, it's like 200 yards from our house... So, after a fun time there, we peaced after a very early last call, went back to the house, where Kalie ended up hitting the club with a few of the other girls, and I ended up (being lame?) staying in while a few of the guys cooked up some midnight munchies. Yeah, free food. I accept. Anyhow, early equestrian tomorrow, so I fully accept my choice of staying in and getting some amount of sleep. There's always tomorrow for the full-on craziness. But, for now, I crash out. Because I am tired. Yay fragmented sentences. Anyhow, while my roommate parties tonight, I am enjoying the absolute comfort of my bed and the change jingling in my pocket. Goodnight, London!

Thursday:
Texas friends! haha
Woke up nice and early for equestrian today and was greeted by an absolutely beautiful day! Carrie and I walked to the stables, and I got the pretty liver chestnut with the super uncomfortable saddle again- Figaro, I believe. But hey, nasty saddle or not, at least I got to ride one of the nice horses again. I'm loving that. Carrie and I got to split off from the group and go on an extended trail ride today all over Hyde Park. It was fantastic! Tons of trotting and cantering and we were actually on responsive, active horses, so it made it all the more fun! Got back to the house and made some leftover pizza for lunch (food of champions, right there...) and some tortilla soup, then headed off to the gym. Yeah, I WILL get into a better habit now that my stupid knee has stopped being angry. Watch a little ANTM after the gym, painted my nails, got all clean, then went downstairs for some baking and dinner making (rhyme!) before chilling for a bit before the group went out. We decided to go back to The Rocket (I feel like this might become a regular place. I mean, I do recognize the bartenders and DJ at this point... now just to make friends with them... hm). Anyhow, it was a very fun evening in which we met some people from Texas (oh yeah, meeting the locals... not) and chatted with them for quite a long while. Why not? I love meeting new friends! All in all, a good night, which yet another adventurous evening. Good thing I've got such an awesome roommate to go through all of this with me!

Days 23-25: A Taste of Mexico

Friday:
At The Rocket with Craig and Kalie
Friday was surprisingly... quiet. Slept in again after going out the night before, which was absolutely fantastic. I swear, by Friday, all I want to do is sleep. And it was probably good that I got to, considering Kalie and I were hit by some viral plague that's been wrecking havoc on the house. And by that I mean a nasty cold. Which is just as heinous as a viral plague, because colds just make you miserable. We decided to battle the elements (yes, the sun took a... raincheck... and the rain arrived again. Sorry... couldn't help myself) and we went out with the guys for some food and food-shopping, considering a severe lack of things to eat in the fridge. Kalie and I split off, grabbed this delicious meat/onion/potto pastry from the tube station and ran to the market while the boys consumed their kebabs. After shopping, we headed back to the house and chilled in the room, as neither of us was feeling too hot. I went out for a fantastic dinner of fish and chips with the boys, then returned to the house and made it an early night with Kalie in hopes of sleeping off the nastiness that is this cold.

Saturday:
Woke up feeling a little bit better. No more sore throat, definitely battling off a cold now, but I've been chugging OJ and getting sleep, so hopefully it'll be gone by tomorrow. I dozed for a couple of hours until Imperial College (the giant London college by us) decided to start off their freshman weekend by blasting super loud music in the park outside our house. Oh well, waking up to "Fire Burning" and a British guy speaking into a microphone was kind of funny. I finally got moving, and then returned to my bed for a little How I Met Your Mother as opposed to studying (although I really need to hop on that, considering midterms are next week). Too bad we have no idea what to study.... Yeah, I'm going to work on figuring that one out later today. Right now (1:30 pm) Kalie's still passed out and recovering and I don't really have an energy to do anything other than sit on my bed and watch a few tv shows. Stupid cold. ....The rest of the day passed with little action. More tv, then went downstairs and read for a bit while eating dinner, then continued reading in the lounge area while some of our group played the most interminable game of Risk. I swear, it's got a lifespan comparable to Monopoly. I left around midnight, grabbed some medicine in hopes of knocking out this awful cold, and fell right back into the bed I stayed in most of today. Oh well, at least it was rainy and gloomy. Very fitting for today. Hopefully tomorrow will speed up a bit- it's Mexican food night, after all! Anyhow, time to crash to the sound of rain. I approve.

Sunday:
Thursday: one of few beautiful days in London.
So apparently I talked about Starburst in my sleep last night. Awesome. Glad to know that cold meds still make me slightly crazy. At least I didn't hallucinate this time. I woke up feeling a bit better- didn't have a voice for a few minutes, but water and a starburst remedied that (hey, it was noon, totally allowed to have candy). I swear, all I do is sleep when I'm sick. Obviously I need it though. Kalie's feeling better, too, so although her coughing and my sniffling make a most disturbing musical, hopefully we're both on the road to recovery here. We took the first part of the afternoon slow, then managed to get our bums in gear and headed out to Whole Foods to grab the ingredients for tortilla soup, because tonight is Mexican Food Night! Finally. I can't explain how much I've been craving mexican food. Anyhow, got back to the house and began the lovely-smelling process of creating tortilla soup with Kalie. I swear, I'm guarding that crock-pot with my life. While the soup was simmering away I actually sat down and did a little bit of homework. I feel really proud of myself. But really... this is a huge accomplishment. Anyhow, one of the guys made bomb carne asada which we "burrito-ized" with a bit of cheese, refried beans, and tortillas, then digested and went for the soup for round 2. I am in the best food coma of my life. But seriously, Sundays are becoming our group's family dinner nights. Best dinner I've had in a long time. Now... time to crack down and do some more studying for midterms. Ehh.
