Days 17-23: Making Friends Wherever I Go

So, we’re going to regress a bit into last semester’s blogging tactics as this week I have limited updates of extraordinary significance or awesomeness. Switzerland and getting accepted into the summer programs are still kind of dominating my life, although I am looking forward to my group trip to Egypt! We leave next Monday- how exciting is that? Seriously, I got my itinerary and there will be camel riding and donkey riding and giant pyramids and so much ancientness that I can’t help but believe it will be an awing and unbelievable experience.

Anyhow, more to come on that after I actually go to Egypt. Man, I am excited!

Update: Obviously that section of the blog was written earlier in the week. Egypt was cancelled. Kind of a downer.

So, a weekly update:

Monday: It proceeded like most Mondays here. An 8am class that really was way too early, followed by the gym, then another class, a small break, then another class, and then group dinner at this delicious little French restaurant. I did manage to fix my skype (it was having strange issues), but at the cost of my computer deleting half of my photos. Thank goodness for facebook, but when I was able to retrieve the photos, they were all mixed up and no longer organized. So I’ve got 1400 photos to go through and categorize. Awesome. I’m really looking forward to that one.

Tuesday: I was able to sleep in a bit this day, then headed off to the gym to do some last minute studying for my midterm in History, which went quite well. 2 essays, American history- I’m feeling fairly confident in my ability to write, so that’s good. Of course, we’ll see when I get the papers back. This was followed by a group “Taco Night” in the house in which our house family made huge amounts of delicious Mexican food upon which I gorged. Yeah, no restraint when it came to dinner on Tuesday night, but that’s ok considering the insane workouts I’ve been doing and will continue to do this week. I finished up the night by hanging out a bit and then devising two query letters (letters that I will be sending to potential literary agents when I try and publish again in a few months) before going to bed, so that was lovely and productive. Now I just need to get working on my novels again!

Wednesday: I got to sleep in a bit again, before heading off to the gym for my daily workout. This was followed by a cancelled class, so I had absolutely no class. So? I watched a movie, relaxed a bit, then got ready for group dinner at Wagamama’s and then headed back to the house, where I attended small group and then hung out in the lounge and watched a movie with a group of kids in the house. It was fun, just chilling and laughing and hanging out with everyone.

Thursday: So, I thought I was going to get to sleep in today, but unfortunately there had to be a random fire alarm, and can I please tell you how absolutely heinous-sounding that damn fire alarm is? Seriously, I’ve never been more scared while waking up in my life. I literally jumped out of sleep and then realized what was going on. Ugh. Anyhow, after dealing with that false alarm, I managed to get about 20 more minutes of sleep before my actual alarm went off and I decided to hit the gym. Legs = sore. Oh well. It’s a healthy soreness, I guess. Anyhow, this was followed by a museum visit to the National Gallery for one of my classes, and then we came back and watched The Patriot for another one of my classes. Thursday night meant no group dinner, so I made myself a little bit of leftover friend rice and then hung out for a bit before retiring to my room and watching a movie. Around 9:30 we all hit the kitchen for the results of our in-house bake-off an enjoyed a huge assortment of desserts. Yum. This was followed by an extremely late night- I got pulled into writing again and didn’t even realize that it was 3 am until I took a break. Sad thing was, my roomie was still awake, too. Darn weird weekend hours here.

Friday: I did get to sleep in today. Well, I mean, I woke up when my roomie got up, but then I rolled back over and fell back asleep, refusing to get out of bed til noon. It was wonderful. This was followed by actual productivity! Woohoo! I wrote my two “evaluation papers” for my British Music class, then did my laundry like the hygienic person I am. Then I checked my email and got awful news- our Cairo trip was cancelled. We’re still going to Luxor, but because of the riots Cairo is too dangerous, yadda yadda. Seriously? I wanted to ride camels and see the pyramids. The whole house is completely bummed out over this, since our trip is being cut in half. I mean, it makes sense that they’re keeping us safe, but it still is such an absolutely hugely crushing realization that we don’t get to see the pyramids while in Egypt. Yeah… Oh, and then, just to include you in the drama- the entire trip was cancelled. Of course, I understand this, considering the violence and revolution and the fact that the airport was closed. It’s just a major bummer. However, hopefully we’ll get another trip in. We’ve been talking Italy or Istanbul, both of which would be brilliant!  Anyhow, I fixed this depression with a little writing, toast-eating, and workout until we hit up Freud’s, one of our bars, and then made it back to the house where I was randomly drawn in to watching some Bear Gryll’s episode with Will Ferrell. Oh, and I made a new friend on the tube from Northern England whose name was Simon. We had a great discussion about cold Londoners and legitimate Mexican food. Quality conversation right there. After that? Well, it was 2:30am. I crashed out. Sleep is lovely.

Saturday: I woke up to my roomie’s alarm today… and then fell back asleep because going to bed at 2 am merits a little bit of sleeping in. When it was almost noon I kind of came to the realization that I needed to get out of bed and actually do something with my life. So…. I did 1000 sit-ups and then got into a new show and watched that for a couple hours.  (It’s out of control over her, isn’t it? Haha, oh laziness). Then I finally got enough inspiration to actually get out of my comfy bed and go to the gym, which was weird and muggy and somewhat painful, although I was proud of myself for going. Woohoo? Yeah. After that I made myself a little dinner, and then Nick was experimenting in the kitchen again so naturally I had to have a second dinner and sample his delicious food. This was followed by a trek to “Trafalgar” our typical bar, where I met a new bartender (“Seth”) and had a good time chatting with my friends. And then I made friends with the bartender, who gave me free drinks and told me that I should come back. Yes? I think so. He was nice and I like free drinks. What a fantastic combo! This was followed by a quick walk to a club, which turned out to be closed… bummer. And it was cold. So we walked back to our house, considering it was already quite late, and then relished in the beautiful warmth of our house in comparison to the nasty cold outdoors. We hit up the kitchen, reheated some amazing pasta, enjoyed the food, and then crashed out after a little bit of socializing. All in all? A very, very good day. I’m glad we’ve picked up on this whole going out thing again!

Sunday: I slept in again and it was fantastic. This was followed by actual productivity and a slight depression over the fact that we have class tomorrow and are not flying to Egypt. But, considering all the deaths and the craziness that’s been on the news, it’s probably best. Especially considering they closed the airport and all… Yeah. Anyhow, got in my sit-ups (1000 a day for the past week. Oh yeah abs, c’mon!), a paper written, a gym visit in, a run around the park to change up my exercising a bit (it was COLD out there tonight), dinner with some friends and a bunch of socializing, before returning to my room for a tv show, a little writing, and a pretty chill Sunday evening.

Days 10-16: 99 Red Balloons Go Flying...

Okay, so here we are again with a weekly update. And boy- there is quite an amount of stuff to mention. So, I'm thinking we'll go with the "what happened this week" first. Well, at least the boring ,monotonous stuff. Then we can move onto the finer and far more exciting points. So-

Monday: I had my ever-lovely 8am class, then some more class (oh Mondays, my hardest day of the week), this was followed my a little gym time, group dinner at Madsen where they tried to feed us semi-raw/raw meat (um, no?), and then had a relaxing Monday night.
Tuesday: We had a group photo today, so I was obliged to get decent before noon (weird... that never happens), this was followed by me skipping the gym for a little How I Met Your Mother and House, then class, then hanging out and a bit of socializing, followed by dinner at Di Marios, some writing and website work, and then some... wait for it... reading! Lovely.
Wednesday: I got to sleep in today. It was lovely. This was followed by the gym, a little bit of a migraine (eww), then some drama figuring out train tickets (lots of drama- I had to reschedule my flight to Switzerland because there were no trains), which was then followed by getting a great email (but you'll see this later), then no class (yeh cancellations!) dinner at Byrons (which was a trek to get to, considering the normal one was closed for reparations and we had to battle the cold to find a new one, but at least the waiter was cute). Once I got back, there was packing and all the necessities of travel preparation, and then my "early night" turned into a super late one that gave me about 3.5 hours of sleep. So, a nap.
Thursday: I got up at 4:30 to make my plane on time. Grabbed a quick breakfast, took the tube to a train to a shuttle, to the plane, to 2 more trains before I reached Chateau D'Oex in the afternoon! It was lovely and snowing and a gorgeous winter wonderland. I ran down to the market and got some necessities (ie, apples, bread, champagne, pasta), made it to the house where i took a 4 hour nap while waiting for 2 or my friends, then met Mike and Allie at the train station. We hit a bar on our way to the apartment, then trekked up the hill and enjoyed a lazy night of reconnecting.
Friday: We got up, made breakfast, met Jillian at the train station, did some more food and champagne shopping, went to a cute cafe, hung out at the house and spent much time catching up, watching movies, and being relaxed and lazy. We decided to hit one of the restaurants that night and got really, really good fajitas. Yes, Mexican food in Switzerland. And they were bomb. We headed back up to the house for more socializing, party tricks, and delicious mimosas.
Saturday: Allie left us early in the morning to head to a retreat, but Mike, Jillian, and I enjoyed further laziness. More movies, more cooking and relaxing, and then we headed into town to check out the boots at the beginning of the balloon festival. We went back up to the house, made dinner, headed back down to the bar, relaxed there for a bit, then went back up and enjoyed our last night together with some card games, jenga, and more mimosas. It was beautiful.
Sunday: We woke up early to slowly prepare to leave the wonderful Chateau D'Oex. Our packing was sporadically stopped as we ran outside and took pictures of the hot air balloons and slowly began filling the sky. Seriously- one of the most beautiful and amazing images I've seen. Hence the plethora of pictures that shall be provided below. After hanging for a few hours, we made it to the train station, ended up parting in Lausanne, I got to the airport and through security and onto my plane without problems. Customs took forever on the other end, and I swear I saw a woman that looked like Robin Williams in Mrs Doubtfire (the Mrs Doubtfire version of him... haha), and finally got on the train back home! I made it there without problems, unpacked, relaxed, and finally got all my pictures uploaded.

What a week!

Okay, so now for the in-detail updates:

1. Balloon Festival was EPIC. Wanna see? Of course you do. Please, indulge the the visual beauty of photography: Um, not sure why the pictures look like they took drugs and got thrown all over the place, but I'm too lazy to fix it. Just enjoy their sporadic placement.

2. Okay, the other  VERY important thing that happened this past week. Ready for it? I don't think you are? Okay, fine, let's post another picture:

Can you read it? I got accepted into the London Summer programs, so I'll be here for another 3 months! It's going to be like year round school, except in one of the most amazing places in the world. I'm psyched. I get an internship at a publishing company/journalism company (depending on what we can find) and then the religion program where I get to go to Israel for a week!

Seriously... I can't believe it. I'm such a fortunate person, and I can't thank my family enough for allowing me to have this opportunity. Right now, it's still so surreal.

Anyhow, I think that's the main stuff for this week! I'm going to Egypt in a week! Woohoo!

Days 4-9: My Mom Thinks I'm Conversational

Okay, so we've got a few little bits of business to take care of before I delve into the wonderful world of London and me. Yes, that does sound arrogant, doesn't it? Well, considering this is a blog about London... and me... I think I'm allowed to say things like that. Besides, apparently this new style of blog-writing I'm trying out is "conversational" and easy to follow (according to my mother), so I think I'm just going to drop lines like that here and there for my own personal benefit and ego-boosting. And off we go on a tangent. Anyhow, moving away from me, myself, and I, let's hit up those little business bits.

1. My dad complained, via email, that he needed to be featured prominently in my blog. I hadn't even realized that he had found the link yet since I vaguely remember some argument about how he didn't get the "updated link", but naturally I had to remedy this, because I can't really afford to lose any followers. This is the first time I'l really publicly published any sort of writing (albeit casual and informal) and allowed people I know to read it, so I kind of enjoy the fact that people continue to read it.  Anyhow, now to remedy that complaint:
Voila!
Okay, so that has now been fixed. Dad- you have been featured prominently, not only with a picture, but as the first mentioned person in this weeks blogging updates! Love you!

Moving on...

2. Elise, if you keep reading and posting comment,s of course we shall have some sort of epic HIMYM adventure. It will involve something with bingo or janga, a remote island, and buying a bar or starting a band, or some other 3 word sentence that is probably not at all smart. Beautiful.

Okay, I think those are the two people that I needed to write to. Maybe I should apologize to my mom for not keeping in contact with her this week. After getting a "where the hell have you been?!" skype, I feel like I might have made a little misstep there. My bad. She just doesn't realize how much it makes me smile when she swears... Oops, I guess it's public knowledge now. Anyhow, continuing forward--

I have a few comments to make this week before I write up a brief schedule of my activities. First on the list is:

The Gym.

Doesn't that just sound epic? I think so. It also kind of looks obnoxiously epic in larger letters and lime green color. Sorry, couldn't help myself. I'm kind of enjoying taking a brief reprieve from my formalized blogging of last semester and just running with this whole "whatever's on my mind" style. If it gets too crazy just drop me a comment and I'll tone it down. Maybe. Depends on how much I like you. Anyhow, the gym! So, I'm sure all those self-help and diet books out there are nice and lovely, but honestly? I lost all that nasty xmas break weight by paying my 35 pounds per month for the use of the Imperial College gym that's not even a block from my London house, and going there on an almost-daily basis, along wiht walking around London, and eating smaller portions. It's way easier this way. And- wait for this bit of knowledge- keep a diary! Food dairies. I should have remembered this from Nutrition class freshman year at Pepperdine. Seriously, keep a diary of what you eat. You snack less, eat healthier, eat smaller portion. Add that with a bit of working out and you can totally afford to have that delicious cosmo or vodka cranberry or, ehh, cup of water at the pub.

I swear, I feel so enlightened. Okay, that was a bit of sarcasm towards myself, but seriously? This week I've felt so much healthier than even a week ago. Granted, that was after x-mas break's Mexican food consumption... Whatever, I seem to be on a good track now. Woohoo! That is, until next week's Switzerland hot air balloon festival which is probably ridden with champagne and sausage and chocolate and bread. Oh well.

Continuing onward- my eyes and hands and frankly my brain are dead. I made the New Year resolution to write every day. I have not broken that- I manage to get in a minimum of 10 minutes every day for my writing, which is going fantastically. I'm quite happy with it, actually. However, I got it into my head that I wanted to try and publish again this summer. Of course, that means having my friends read some of my work, editing it like crazy, doing tons of researching, and the likes. Unfortunately, it's a pain to email such huge files to my friends, so I thought it would be a brilliant idea to make a website to help the reading process. But then there comes the problem of me being a perfectionist. Not only did I decide to forgo making just a single page to post text on, I had to re-educate myself in html and make this huge epic monstrosity of a site that turned out extraordinarily well, but I've spent so much free time the last 4 night working on the beast. Seriously... hours upon hours upon hours. I mean, I got in all my socializing time, too, but goodness, this site has become an absolute monster in my life, and I'm still not done loading up the actual writing. Ridiculous. But I am proud of my photography, which I turned into some of the images for the site. Seriously- check it:   Click Here.

Please, oh and ah as much as you'd like. It looks fabulous in the actual website.

Okay, so moving past the gym and writing and site-creating, I'm still waiting to hear back on my internship. I swear, I have about the patience of a really small child looking for candy on this matter. I. WANT. to know. NOW. But I guess that update of whether or not I got it shall have to wait another week. (I really hope it doesn't last any longer than that...).

Sidenote- my room is really dark right now. I need to get new light bulbs for the chandelier, because it gets dark around 4:30 here and that is not conducive for writing. The dim lighting makes me all tired.

I think that's the last bit of business that I've got to write about now. I'm loving the new London kids, I'm a bit sleep-deprived, but heck, I expected that for the first week. I did get to sleep in today. I actually didn't get out of bed until 12:30. But then I worked out, so I feel like that negates the earlier laziness.

So, time for a quick overview of the week before I conclude this week's blogging.

----

Tuesday: Good day of light classes, hung out with the new kids a bit and I'm loving the new group. They fit in excellently. We ended up going to The King's Speech after dinner- I highly recommend seeing this movie. It was amazing. We booked Ireland for St. Patty's day after the movie, and then booked Dover for the weekend.
Wednesday: Didn't have class til 4 today, so that was lovely. I hit up the gym, got some writing and website-creation done, hung out with people, and finally made it to the museum with Jessica, which was a new one, so naturally we got lost. However, we spoke to a lovely man at Starbucks who gave us directions, and we (although late) were the first people to arrive. And it was in a new area, so it WAS fun exploring. The London weather really started up this day- not so cold, but the drizzle and cloudiness has definitely set in. I ended up looking up good writing cafes with Diana later that night. We're excited to go and explore and check them out.
Thursday: Got to "sleep in" a bit today before hitting up the gym. This was followed by another museum visit (we actually knew where this one was so made it on time, and still first- woohoo!). After the visit we headed back to the house. I worked on my website while everyone napped, and then we made some food before heading out to our favorite bar, Trafalgar. My favorite bartender was there, but I did make friends with the new ones and I found a friend in Andrew, who will match me... err cup of water for cup of water. Yup. They offer great glasses of water. It was a fun night.
Friday: Jessica and I slept in a bit on Friday before I took her to Piccadilly Circus for some touring and shopping for a present for her bf. We were successful and made it back to the house in time for a little relaxing before we headed out for the British Museum with the house. It was amazing! Such a beautiful building (regardless of the long walk in pouring rain before we actually got there). We saw the Egyptian exhibits (in preparation for our visit to Egypt) and then split up for small group dinners. I got delicious Mexican food and once again indulged in such a lovely meal. Whatever. I'd been working out all week. After this the house reconvened and we saw Les Miserables- amazing show! Seriously, go see it if you can. We hung out a bit after, and then I wrote and did some web-work, but not too crazy due to our early morning the following day.
Saturday: We woke up early for Dover today. I ended up going with Jaclyn, Andrew, Mallorie, and Jessica (largely new people) but it was so much fun. We saw two castles (but not the main one... unfortunately we were misguided and ran out of time). We did get to walk a few miles along the coast (and it wasn't too bad of weather- a bit windy) and see the cliffs and we had a lovely lunch, before heading back home. We watched a movie that night before I did some more writing and web-work.
Sunday: I was lazy today, because I could be. I ended up sleeping in to a lovely hour, then hit up the gym, and spent the rest of the afternoon having a little me-time in the room working on my website, writing, listening to music, and now writing this blog. And it's only 4:30, so I have a decent amount of time until my 8am class tomorrow. Eugh.

----

So, that's it for this week's update. I'll work on getting some pictures up soon. I've been really bad about uploading pictures from my camera for the last month. Ehh, I'll work on that. Eventually...

Day 3: It's A New Dawn, A New Day, A New Semester...

Monday

So, I was looking at Day 3's title for last semester, and realized that we went clubbing on Day 3. Craziness. We were insane last semester. Kind of awesome, actually. Unfortunately, this idiotic cold has my head in the clouds and my body protesting any movement that isn't at a snail's pace. And concentration? Forget about it. My 8 am, which is 3 hours long, had me sitting in a chair zoning out and staring into space, probably drooling, too, because I can't breathe out of my nose. Naturally, I thought it would be smart to renew my gym membership today and get a workout in. Yeah, I might be a college student, but my brain obviously did not get me into university, or maybe it's just malfunctioning today. Let's check out the equation:

Running on the treadmill for an hour + inability to breathe out of nose + issues with breathing in general from a cold = really bad idea.

Alright, now that we all know how much of a brain fail I am having today, we can move on the grander things. Like the fact that I am going to be an extremely lazy student again this semester. At least academically. But this is okay, because I plan on filling the blank spaces with workouts and writing and exploring the heck out of this city. So, are we all prepared to see what I'm taking this semester? Let's have a look back in the past really quickly so we can do a quick compare and contrast of my academically-miniscule sophomore year.

Last Semester:
Modern History of the Middle East, Humanities 2, Fine Arts (Art and Architecture), Equestrian, Independent PE
This Semester:
Humanities 3, History 304 (American History), Fine Arts (Modern British Music), Enriching the International Experience (journal and discussion time), Independent PE, Junior Writing Portfolio (turn in pre-written works)

The best part of this? Well, my schedule. Oh, you want to see it? But of course. Here we go:

Monday: British Music (8-11am), Enriching (1:30-2:30pm), Humanities (4-6pm)
Tuesday: Convocation (12-1pm), History (4-6pm)
Wednesday: History museum visit (4-6pm)
Thursday: Humanities museum visit (1:30-2:30pm)

Yeah, I'm pretty proud of myself. Anyhow, at least this time I switched one of my two PE classes for a journaling class, so I'll be social for an hour. Haha. Anyhow, now moving on the even bigger and better things- the reason behind taking so few units (both semesters host a grand total of 12 credits each):

TRAVEL.

And what, might you ask, does this entail? Well, travel entails me moving my body all across Europe in search of epic and awesome places with equally epic and awesome friends. And I've actually got most of it planned out right now. So let's take a little look, shall we?

*Switzerland - Jan 20-23
*Egypt - Jan 31- Feb 5
*Amsterdam - Feb 11-13
Mom Visits - Feb 18-25
Jillian Visits - Feb 17-20
Long Weekend (place TBD) - March 1-6
*Germany - March 10-13
*Ireland - March 17-20

Yeah, I'm kind of psyched about this. And, the best part is, I can do all of this traveling because I applied for this lovely internship (I was interviewed today, which went fantastically), and both the program director and Jenny (basically second in command here at the London house) have told me that my chances of getting in are very, very high. And they like me, which definitely helps. So, regardless of this damn cold and my 8 am class that has me moving around like a zombie with sleep deprivation, there are still some pretty brilliant things going down here. I'm excited.

And now, a quick overview of the day: British music from 8-11, which was interesting and should be fun.  Gym workout afterwards, then Enriching he International Experience class from 1:30-2:30, then my interview for the internship, then Humanities from 4-6, then group dinner at My Old Dutch, and then some light socializing before a semi-early bedtime.

All in all? A great start to an even greater semester.

Oh, and P.S. to Elise (who had better still be following this)- I enjoyed our Rose's breakfast burrito sesh.

Days 1-2: Round Two, Let's Go

An epic day of travel...

I swear, travel days completely mess my mind up, being they are actually a compilation of days, so it just throws everything off. I was up at 8 am on Friday to hit the gym and them run around Newport and finish up all my last minute packing and errands and such. By the time I was in the car to the airport, I was ready to be in London. I hate the stress of all that traveling nonsense, but luckily the airport was pretty quiet, so I guess that helped kill the whole "stress factor" of the situation. I said goodbye to my family, shocked that I was leaving already (because it really felt as though I had only been home for a couple days as opposed to an entire month), made it through security, and then found myself a Mexican food place to hang out in while I waited for my plane to board. And, of course, I had to get one last bit of Mexican food before hitting up London, where that food style is pretty much a foreign concept.

The plane ride itself wasn't too long, considering I had movies to watch. Of course, American Airlines wasn't the best way to go, and my seat parters consisted of a couple that had to get up every hour, together, and consequently wake me up every time they so desired to stretch their legs. So, that was... aggravating, to say in the least. I didn't get any sleep on that 10 hour ride. But, we finally landed in Heathrow, I got my bag, made it to the Underground, and hopped on the Piccadilly line back to South Kensington! After arriving at my home stop, I hauled that massive bag up and down some stairs, met up with some people from the house, and finally, FINALLY, made it back up to my room. There, the unpacking commenced, a little skyping with my mom, some chatting with friends downstairs, and then dinner and a drink at a pub with a few people in the group, which was a lot of fun. It was nice getting the social aspect back right away, and it was fun going out with a bunch of the new people and getting to know them as well.

Back at home, I finally got my shower, chatted a little more, and then decided that bed was probably a good idea when I saw midnight on the clock. 36 hours of being awake... oh goodness. My bed never felt so amazing.

The following day, I got to sleep in til a bit before 10 before someone began blasting opera and one of the guys in the room next door came bounding into the 6-girl room screaming spanish awakenings in an awful accent. Beautiful way to wake up. Please note the sarcasm. Anyhow, let's just say that the jetlag hit about 10 times harder today. I was TIRED. So, I slowly moved downstairs, grabbed breakfast, then pulled myself back upstairs to find medicine (damn cold that decided to set in the day of my departure. Awesome, that's exactly what I wanted and needed), chatted with the roomie for a bit, before she headed off to church. I debated on going to the gym, but then decided a movie seemed like a better idea because my head felt like it was in the clouds form the cold medicine (I love being a lightweight with meds... geez). Following my movie, my eyeballs were tired, so I decided to take a nap. I accidently forgot to set my alarm and slept from 3-6:30, but I obviously needed it. I woke up, chatted with the roomie (Jessica, I don't know if I mentioned her name yet), and then proceeded to do 200 out of my normal 500 or 1000 situps before changing my mind and relaxing again instead. Workouts can wait til tomorrow. Today was a lazy day and deserved to remain as such. So I skyped my family for a bit, listened to music, and went to bed early in preparation for - wait for it - my 8 am Monday class.

Ew.
